CHATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A severe storm moved through the Village of Chatham Thursday night, causing widespread damage. A village-wide state of emergency was declared as a result.
The storm moved through the area at about 9:40 p.m., and village officials said Chatham Emergency Services received the first call for service as early as 9:45 p.m. Authorities said emergency responders handled more than 40 service calls overnight, with more storm-related calls continuing throughout the day.

Residents are dealing with fallen trees, downed powerlines, damaged transformers, blocked roadways and power outages, on top of the already scorching heat wave. Some are also without water, after the village’s water pump station lost power and the backup generator malfunctioned. A portable generator has been requested through the New York State Office of Emergency Management and is on its way to the village.
