CASTLETON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Cleanup efforts in the entire Capital Region are underway as people begin to see some of the damage caused by Wednesday’s rainfall in the area. In Rensselaer County, Simons Road in Castleton has a section completely washed away, creating a huge crevasse in the road. Marc Salerno lives nearby the crevasse and says the water that came through rivals that of tropical storm Irene.
“When the hurricane came through whenever that was 12, 15 years ago, there was an awful lot of water,” said Salerno. “But this was way more than that.”

While people are beginning to assess the damage that was caused by the rain storm, officials are looking at how the area will recover. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin said Thursday his team is meeting with the state’s emergency management office.
“They are going to tour some of the damaged areas with us this afternoon,” said McLaughlin. “[To] get a read on on what’s going on and we’ll find out if there’s any availability of state resources to help.”

McLaughlin said his office has been in contact with the state’s Office of Emergency Management. While NEWS10 was onsite at Simons Road, state officials came to look at the opening in the ground caused by the water damage.
