SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Capital Region family has chosen to celebrate, not mourn, the loss of their son. 9-year-old Davin Yap died after a car crash on I-95 in Virginia last month while his family was driving home from vacation. On Saturday afternoon, his family honored him with a celebration of life at the Slingerlands Fire Department.

“Davin was just full of life and he would want everyone to party. So that’s what we’re doing today,” said Davin’s mom, Jessica Yap. “We knew that we were never going to want to mourn our child because he was everything. So, we wanted to have a party and just celebrate him and who he was and just really have everyone live like Davin and be goofy, be silly, be crazy.”
Instead of a funeral, his family decided to throw him a party. His grandfather, Dave Eck, explained, “Davin didn’t like to see people cry. He hated it. So, everybody’s supposed to have a good time.” He continued, “Come and play all day, that’s what he would be doing,”
The celebration of life was held at the Slingerlands Fire Department pavilion – one of Davin’s favorite spots. Guests wore cyan, his favorite color, and sharks– his favorite animal — were everywhere.
