A video showing a Schenectady police officer opening a resident’s mailbox, removing pieces of mail and looking through them has raised questions about whether the officer needed a warrant before doing so, according to a CBS6 Albany report by investigative reporter Briana Supardi.
The Schenectady Police Department told CBS6 that the officer was conducting a criminal investigation, but the department did not disclose what crime was being investigated or what specifically brought police to the home.
Supardi took the footage to attorney Greg Rinckey, who said the legality of the search depends heavily on whether police had a warrant or some recognized exception to the usual warrant requirement.
