MENANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Back in May, a fire tore through the Menands Firehouse, damaging the building that also houses the Police Station and Town Hall, and leaving their fire and police departments to operate out of temporary locations. At a village board meeting on Monday night, the village outlined the steps that they’re taking toward rebuilding.

Menands Mayor Brian Marsh said crews have been running environmental testing on the building, one of several steps before any rebuilding can begin. He continued, “Our engineers have been there today, and will be there tomorrow doing some environmental testing, checking for types of contamination from anything that was stirred up during the fire– be it lead, asbestos and then many other contaminants,”
The fire broke out in one of the firehouse bays, destroying Squad 6 and damaging two other trucks. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Since then, crews have been using a truck they borrowed from Shaker Road Fire as the village sorts out a temporary firehouse location. The mayor explained, “We’re close to having at least a solution where we can, as we evaluate the needs of this building, whether it’s repaired or replaced or whatever, we feel that we can operate all season, all year for a good period of time.”…
