NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Residents in Niskayuna have differing opinions on new sidewalks being installed starting in the spring.

Both five-foot-wide sidewalks are being added along what the town calls “critical access corridors.” One is going on the east side of Birchwood Lane, connecting Troy-Schenectady Road, or Route 7, to Birchwood Elementary School. The other one is going on the west side of Cornelius Avenue, connecting Ray Street to Hillside Elementary School.
One resident on Birchwood Lane, who asked to remain anonymous, has gotten just shy of 30 households to sign a petition against the sidewalks. She said the trees are one of her main concerns, with a few of them standing on the lawns longer than the residents have been alive.
“It’s not just one side of the street that’s being affected, it is the whole neighborhood,” she said.

Several trees along the road have green ribbon tied around them, along with signs at the base with phrases on them like “No Sidewalk,” “I’m a tree, don’t kill me,” and “We want trees.”…
