RENSSELAER COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Just outside their windows, some Rensselaer County residents were greeted with an a-moose-ing sight this past weekend. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) received reports of what many locals just had to see to believe: a bull moose trotting through various areas in the western part of the county.
NYSDEC first received reports of the young moose being spotted west of Poestenkill on Saturday and then in Wynantskill on Sunday. On Monday morning, the moose was seen near the side of I-90 in North Greenbush near the Defreestville exit.
NYSDEC officials explained that bull moose are entering breeding season this time of year and can cover large distances looking for possible mates. They are asking people to continue to report any moose sightings to DEC Region 4 Wildlife at 518-357-2355 or by emailing [email protected]. Department of Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) are monitoring the sightings and encouraging drivers to be safe.

While the towering, yet graceful creatures are eye-catching, NYSDEC advises the public to keep their distance if they see a moose and allow the animal to move on its own. Officials remind drivers not to pull over to observe on busy highways and roads, as that can create safety issues for motorists.
