VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A barred owl caused quite the hoot on a trail in Albany County on Saturday. A patron reported the owl after she found it sitting in the middle of a trail in John Boyd Thacher State Park.

The hiker told park officials she was concerned that the owl was injured because it didn’t attempt to fly or move away when approached. An environmental educator with the park alerted a park ranger Josh Horth of the owl’s situation.
Horth located the bird and safely collected it. He immediately contacted a wildlife rehabilitator and transported the owl to their care.
According to Thacher State Park officials, the owl is now receiving help. The rehabilitator shared the following update with park staff on Sunday:
“He (I think because he’s on the small side and very young) is still with us, made it overnight! I gave him fluids, a special food for emaciated raptors and an anti inflammatory. He’s in rough shape but I’m all in to help him and will do everything I can. I cleaned him up and sprayed for bugs he’s picked up from being grounded. He’s perching and that’s a good sign but his prognosis is guarded. I don’t give up.”
