Applyrs unveils $257 million budget aimed at stabilizing city finances

ALBANY — Mayor Dorcey Applyrs unveiled a $257 million general fund budget for the coming year, a spending plan aimed at curbing years of budget deficits that threaten the city’s long-term financial health.

The spending plan relies on a 15% increase — $9.646 million — in the city’s property tax levy, the total amount of money in the budget paid for by property taxes. The proposed residential tax rate was not immediately available.

The spending plan dwarfs the $228 million budget Mayor Kathy Sheehan proposed last fall for 2026. The spending plan, passed with few changes by the Common Council, is expected to leave the city with a $26 million budget deficit by the end of the year, according to the state comptroller’s office…
