PORTLAND, Maine – Tyler Dean, a 49-year-old man from New York, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison by U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr., for his involvement in distributing fentanyl through the United States Postal Service (USPS). Following his prison term, Dean will undergo three years of supervised release, as determined in U.S. District Court in Portland.
Court documents reveal that in June 2020, Dean dispatched an envelope containing fentanyl from the Schenectady, New York area to an address in Rockland, Maine. He utilized an alias for the shipment, which was sent via USPS Priority Mail Express. Evidence from text and Facebook messages indicated Dean’s awareness of mailing a controlled substance, although he was uncertain of its specific nature. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of fentanyl in the mailed package. Tragically, the individuals who received Dean’s package, a married couple, succumbed to accidental overdoses on the same day the package was delivered.
