Nurse practitioner arrested on drug distribution charges

LATHAM, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — A Latham man working as a nurse practitioner has been charged with drug distribution outside of professional practice, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District. Christopher Viagrande, 41, was arrested on February 6.

Viagrande is accused of prescribing amphetamine on 40 separate occasions between May of 2021 to December of 2023 to someone who was never his patient. He was ordered to be released on Thursday under certain conditions, including a prohibition on his prescribing controlled substances.

Viagrande faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million if convicted, as well as a term of post-release supervision of up to 3 years. The case remains under investigation by the Tactical Diversion Squad of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
