Empire State University launches virtual food pantry

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Empire State University is setting up a virtual food pantry, spearheaded by Basic Needs Coordinator Bethany Tatro and her team. The resource will fill a one-time, emergency need for students and connect them with resources in their community to open them to a continuing support system.

Students will first apply to give information to Tatro’s team about the number of people in their household and the type of emergency they have. They will then receive a link to create a cart online, through providers such as Amazon or Walmart, with a budget based on the information provided.

The cart will be reviewed, submitted, and delivered conveniently to the student. Students’ needs will then be addressed as soon as possible.

According to Empire State University, the virtual food pantry has been in the works since early November. The finished product was launched on January 26, and the university says the pantry saw 68 applications on the first day alone.
