ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — With February being Black History Month, Carolyn McLaughlin hopes to make black history of her own…announcing she’s running for mayor again, hoping to become the first African-American to hold that office.
Dorcey Applyrs announces candidacy for Albany Mayor
“Good morning, Good morning!” said McLaughlin as she stepped out in vibrant colors at the Kenmore Ballroom.
“That’s the kind of leadership you would get from me, as mayor of the city of Albany!” McLaughlin later said.
She emphatically announced her run to become the capital city’s next chief executive. This is the second time the Democrat attempted to become the city’s first mayor of color. She’s made history before. Albany County’s first district legislator was also the first black president of Albany’s Common Council. She’s not the only black person in the race, however. Chief City Auditor Dorcey Applyrs announced her candidacy back in November.
After all the pomp and circumstance came the hard questions, like what to do about gun violence in Albany? “It’s not all on the police department’s back, it’s not all on the fire department’s back, it’s not on social services’ back, we have to work together as different levels of government,” said McLaughlin.
