Public hearings being on National Grid rate hike request

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The first of three public hearings is Tuesday night in Albany on National Grid’s proposed rate hike.

The utility submitted a proposal in May that would raise delivery rates, resulting in about a 15% increase in electric and 20% increase in gas bills for the average customer. The request is subject to approval by the New York State Public Service Commission.

National Grid cited the typical reasons for the increase — continuing ‘to deliver safe, reliable energy’ and ‘improving customer service’. But it also blamed clean energy initiatives ‘through New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act’ for driving up costs.

In addition to Tuesday’s 6 p.m. hearing, the PSC will hold a second Wednesday in Clay (Syracuse suburb) and another next Tuesday in Buffalo.

For those unable to attend, there is a virtual hearing on Wednesday, September 25 at 1 p.m. Click here to learn more and register.
