For 21 years, Stillwater PD donates phones to abuse victims

STILLWATER, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Since 2003, the Stillwater Police Department has been marking the month by donating cell phones to organizations that help victims of domestic violence. These phones can be a lifeline to people whose methods of communication have been cut off by their partner.

The effort, in its 21st year, has collected and donated around 7,500 phones to victims of domestic violence. The program was created by retired Stillwater Police Chief Ray Cordani. He came up with the idea and put it into motion and was at the head of the operation until this year, when he handed over the reins to Stillwater Police Commissioner John Nett.
