Looking Back: Crime spree follows police chief’s departure

Following closely after the departure back to New York City of Capt. William H. Funston, acting police director for Schenectady, a new surge of lawlessness hit the city, just like before he first arrived in the wake of the murder of Vice Squad Capt. Albert Youmans.

The latest crime was the shooting of 18-year-old Anthony Durma of Front Street as he was walking home with his friends after leaving the public library on Union Street. As he reached the corner of Front and Monroe streets, he felt sudden pains and found he had been shot in the neck and hand by a mystery assailant. A shotgun was used, just as in the Youmans killing…
