CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — Saturday is the sixth day of a strike among corrections officers in the state, an action the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) states will have consequences for the strikers.
According to DOCCS, corrections officers who continue to take part in this illegal job action are violating the law. Commissioner Martuscello’s memo on Thursday urged those striking to return to their work “in order to restore the safety and security to our facilities.”
It also included a promise the state would not “pursue discipline against any employees who immediately report to work today, before 11:59 pm, regardless of the employee’s schedule or shift, who were participating in the job action.” As a result of this, several officers did return to duty. In addition, the mediation process between DOCCS and NYSCOPBA on safety and recruitment — led by NYSCOPBA’s preferred mediator — began on Friday and that process is ongoing.
