NY sheriffs oppose order banning hiring of fired prison officers

ALBANY — The New York sheriffs’ association is hoping Gov. Kathy Hochul will reverse course on an executive order she issued this week that prohibits more than 2,000 state correction officers who were terminated at the end of a recent prison strike from working for a county agency.

The governor’s executive order, issued Monday, followed a 22-day strike involving thousands of correction officers who walked off the job on Feb. 17 in apparent violation of a state law that governs public employees and prohibits them from striking. The law is intended, in part, to prevent the loss of critical services due to a public-sector labor stoppage.

Although Hochul could have limited her order only to state agencies, she also amended several municipal laws to block those officers from trying to land new jobs with a county, including at a local correctional facility — which in New York are run by sheriffs…
