Superior Merchandise Company in Troy closes its doors

TROY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The Superior Merchandise Company has closed its doors once again. The company marked its final day in March.

Owners Felicity Jones and Mike Romig first opened Superior Merchandise Company in 2015, purchasing the then-dilapidated building on 147 4th Street from the city of Troy for $1. However, the company was forced to close the location in April 2023 due to rising operating costs, though its web shop remained up and running.

In November 2023, Superior Merchandise Company reopened with Superette , a retail shop located in a 200-square-foot space at 625 River Street in Troy. The store sold pantry items, kitchenware, gifts and other products.

“We were a community hub, a third space, the first place you’d bring your friends from out of town, where you’d meet up with old friends and make new friends,” Jones said in a Facebook post in March , where she recounted the company’s journey. “SM CO was so many things to so many people — there were so many different versions, pivots, expansions and contractions over the years.”

Now, the business has shuttered its doors once again. Both the Superior Merchandise Company’s web shop and Superette store closed on March 16, with the owners citing financial difficulties…
