After nearly 50 years, Blotto gets a documentary

Much of the Capital Region had no access to MTV until September of 1981, a month after the cable station premiered on Aug. 1, but those that did and were glued to their TVs on that first day got to witness the music video for “I Wanna Be a Lifeguard” from Albany’s own new wave/surf rock/R&B tongue-in-cheek band Blotto be the 36 th video ever played on the channel, nestled between ones from Iron Maiden and Rod Stewart.

But there was so much more to the band than just that career footnote, from its origins and evolution years before on up to the present day. And now for the first time, the story is being told in the new documentary, “Hello! My Name Is Blotto: The Movie!,” premiering at the Cohoes Music Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The director and remaining band members will all be in attendance and participate in a Q&A session.
