Lawsuit: Correction Officers “brutally beat” Ameek Nixson before death

Albany — On Monday, the family of Ameek Nixson filed a lawsuit for “pre-action discovery and preservation”, a move they say is one of their first steps in working to achieve justice in the death of Nixson. Nixson, a man from Albany, was killed inside Fishkill Correctional Facility in October, 2024.

Since his death, the family says they’ve struggled to get answers, and clarity, in the circumstances surrounding his death. The autopsy, which they FOILed for, declared the death a homicide “by others”.

State Police have closed their investigation, with the Attorney General’s Office and DOCCS investigative unit saying they’re also still looking into it. The family is filing this lawsuit in the effort of finding out who the “others” are…
