68 NY police officers honored at memorial ceremony in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — New York State officials gathered in Albany on Tuesday for the annual New York State Police Officers Memorial Remembrance Ceremony. Law enforcement personnel who sacrificed their lives in service were honored at the commemorative event.

According to the Governor’s Office, the names of 68 police officers from 11 departments across the state were added to the New York State Police Officers Memorial, located at Empire State Plaza. A total of 1,908 officers are now inscribed on the memorial.

“Today we honor the lives of the heroic men and women who took an oath to protect New Yorkers and lost their lives in the line of duty,” Governor Hochul said at the ceremony. “Day after day, our law enforcement officers and their families make the ultimate sacrifice in service of their communities, and I am deeply grateful to the brave individuals who dedicate their lives to keeping the public safe.”

Among the names honored at Tuesday’s ceremony was John Grassia III, a New York State Police technical sergeant and U.S. Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 2. Rotterdam-native Grassia died in March 2024 in a helicopter crash while patrolling the US-Mexico border . He was 30 years old
