New York lawmakers to address rising deaths in state correctional facilities

ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) — In response to a troubling increase in deaths within New York State correctional facilities, the Senate Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime, and Correction, alongside the Assembly Standing Committee on Correction, held a joint public hearing Wednesday morning at the Legislative Office Building in Albany to scrutinize the safety, transparency, and accountability of these institutions.

Recent incidents, including the deaths of Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility in December 2024 and Messiah Nantwi at Mid-State Correctional Facility in March 2025, have heightened concerns about the conditions in facilities managed by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). The Correctional Association of New York reported that 143 incarcerated individuals died in DOCCS custody in 2024, marking a 34% increase from the previous year.
