Albany man charged with modifying flare gun to fire bullets, part of emerging trend

ALBANY — Deputies discovered a flare gun modified to shoot bullets after stopping an 18-year-old man, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said.

Deputies apprehended the man late Friday night around Lexington and Sheridan avenues after he and a group of people took off running when authorities approached, Apple said Monday. Deputies found a modified flare gun on the teen with a loaded .40-caliber round, Apple said.

“It would have fired,” Apple said. “A lot of times these guns blow up in their faces and cause harm to the shooter, but there’s also a chance it could take a life.”…
