SCHENECTADY — As emergency medical services loaded Stefanie up into an ambulance on a Thursday evening, she had a feeling she was going to lose her arm.
On the evening of April 17, a 44-year-old Schenectady man shot at his wife in a North End Drive apartment before turning the gun and killing himself. Stefanie, shielding her face with her right arm, was shot in the wrist and bullet shrapnel hit her upper shoulder and chest.
Despite performing various medical procedures, doctors told her that they would be unable to save her arm several weeks after her first surgery. Shen ended up needing an amputation below her elbow — something she had anticipated.
