USS Slater hosts ceremony honoring WWII destroyer escorts

ALBANY, N.Y. — At the historic USS Slater, a bell rang as veterans and families dropped flowers into the water to commemorate National Destroyer Escort Day. The ceremony honored all destroyer escorts and sailors lost during World War II. More than 500 escorts protected Allied ship convoys from submarine and air attacks in both the Atlantic and Pacific, with 15 being sunk in battle.

Shanna Schuster, the Visitor Engagement & Program Manager for the USS Slater, said, “It is amazing this ship is still here. She has a crazy history. We don’t have any of the big battle stories during WW2, but she escorted convoys from the US over to England, making sure food, provisions and ammunition got over there. All of the ships in her convoy survived, so she did a great job.”…
