Albany Medical Center mistakenly left objects in surgery patients at least 7 times since 2020

ALBANY — Michael Peters’ surgeon said he was lucky to be alive. A severe infection prompted his doctors at Albany Medical Center to remove his right leg at the hip in January 2020. But after the amputation, multiple follow-up procedures and months of recovery, something was not right.

Six months after surgery, his physicians found the answer: at least one, if not multiple, sponges had been left inside Peters’ wound, festering, leaving his amputation site sore and oozing. The Coxsackie resident needed another operation to take them out.

“He was very angry about the fact that they could be so careless and leave behind something like that,” remembered his sister-in-law Amy Peters…
