Watervliet bar sorry for calling senior patrons ‘old bitches’

WATERVLIET — The owners of a city bar have apologized after a staff member referred to a party of seven senior customers as “old bitches.”

Ron and Helen Wilkinson, who opened the bar Deacon Blues, at 806 25th St., in July 1979 and named it after a song by Steely Dan, are described as “mortified” that a server put the label on separate receipts for seven women friends who live together in a senior community.

In a statement to the Times Union, a Deacon Blues representative said, “I assure you that the owners are currently on vacation and are genuinely mortified by the behavior of their staff. They are committed to ensuring that all guests feel respected and valued. When they return, appropriate actions will be taken to address these concerns.” A similar apology was made Monday under the bar’s Facebook account on the Facebook post that drew attention to the incident on Friday afternoon…
