The future of policing in Albany could depend on how many new recruits the department can bring in. With numbers down, officials say they’re taking action to attract the next generation of officers. To help close the gap, Albany police are using the summer to reach out to colleges for interested students. There are zoom sessions for community members, as well as free trainings every other Tuesday. They are hoping to attract people from all walks of life, including those in mid-career who are looking for a change, just like Sergeant Dan Kohler.

“I was a teacher for 8 years, so it’s something that I was on a career path, had gone to college and done all my education towards one thing, and I made a shift and have been able to create a whole different career.”

They are looking to fill positions in multiple departments, from detective work to family services. There are also leadership tracks, with opportunities to work towards becoming a Lieutenant or Commander.
