Plans for grocery store in Schenectady food desert progressing

SCHENECTADY — The county has signed a letter of intent to have a major supermarket chain operate a full-service grocery store in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood near downtown, according to county officials.

The area is considered a food desert, a term describing neighborhoods and communities that have limited access to affordable and nutritious food.

The proposed store would be part of a larger mixed-use project destined for 756 State St., the former site of a Mohawk Honda dealership that the county purchased in addition to land adjacent to it, according to Schenectady County Legislature Chairman Gary Hughes…
