‘You’re a dead man walking:’ Texts come out in court for 2013 fatal Schenectady house fire

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A bundle of old text messages, phone call records and photographs resurfaced in the Albany Federal Courthouse Wednesday, during a detention hearing for Edward Leon — the man charged with starting the 2013 fatal house fire in Schenectady that killed a father and three of his children.

Leon was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 31, facing one charge of malicious use of fire to destroy property resulting in death. Paul DerOhannesian, a criminal defense attorney, said there are many aspects of this case that make it complicated.

“Well certainly the heart of this case and why this case is different is that a whole charge and indictment has been brought against another individual,” said DerOhannesian. “That’s what makes it more of an unusual case and why this hearing went so long yesterday because the defense had so much they could argue.”

DerOhannesian is referring to Robert Butler — who was the original person charged with starting this fire. The fire happened just after 4 a.m. on May 2, 2013 at 438 Hulett St. in Schenectady, killing father David Terry, 32, and three of his children, Michael Terry, 3, Layah Terry, 2, and Donovan Duell, 11 months…
