Caribbean culture celebrated at Albany festival

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) The Columbia Country Sanctuary Movement’s Caribbean Festival took place at Jenning’s Landing in Albany on Saturday. It went from 11 A.M. until 6 P.M., and they also had an after-party, called a “Caribbean Bashment” from 9:30 P.M. through 3 A.M.

The 2nd annual Caribbean Festival lined up live musical performances, a variety of food vendors, bouncy houses, face painting and more in celebration of the vast Caribbean community in the Capital Region.

Organizers said how important it was to celebrate their heritage publicly, even with concerns about ICE. Co-Chair of the Columbia Country Sanctuary Movement, Jenifer Benn said that there was a concern about ICE impacting the event, but she says that that’s why celebrations like this are so important.

Benn went on to add, “We definitely took a lot of steps to make sure that we had correct teams, that we were appropriately set up and staffed for today to ensure the security of our members and everyone attending, because it was really important that we didn’t want to fuel the fear that was already going on.”
