State Police mourn retired sergeant who died from illness stemming from 9/11

NEW YORK STATE (WRGB) — It is with deep sadness that Superintendent Steven G. James announces the line of duty death of retired Sergeant Frederick W. Scheidt Jr., 67.

Sergeant Scheidt passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from an illness stemming from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. His death is a solemn reminder of the lasting toll borne by those who responded selflessly in the aftermath of that tragic day.

Sergeant Scheidt dedicated 30 years of service to the New York State Police, retiring on October 14, 2009. He was last assigned to Troop G – SP Saratoga…
