Albany Co. Sheriff’s Office to host gun buyback program

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a gun buyback event on Tuesday. According to authorities, the program comes as part of ongoing efforts to address gun violence and remove illegal guns from the streets.

Members of the sheriff’s office will issue pre-paid Mastercard gift cards for operable handguns surrendered at the event. This is a no questions asked event, and all firearms surrendered will be considered voluntary and anonymous.

Tuesday’s event will mark the first in a series of Albany County gun buyback programs, organized under the PEACE (Preventing Endangerment & Criminal Exposure) initiative. Designed to be mobile and hosted out of the Sheriff’s Mobile Command Center, the initiative plans to hit gun violence hotspots throughout the county, as well as areas that may not be able to access regular buyback events.

The event will take place in the parking lot of the Albany County Board of Elections in Albany’s South End from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says that the office hopes to hold future gun buyback events every 10 to 14 days, with scheduling and location details to come at a later date…
