Metal detectors coming to Watervliet High

WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Students and visitors of the Watervliet Junior Senior High School District will have to walk through metal detectors when entering the building and attending outside sporting events starting this September. The District bought two of them at $25,000 each.

“We’ve seen an increase in behaviors of some juveniles within the city. We are just taking a proactive measure to make sure that nothing transpires into the school setting,” said Superintendent Donald Stevens.

Back in June, a 14-year-old girl stabbed another girl during a fight on 13th street. There was also a fight at the Watervliet McDonald’s where a 16-year-old punched a police officer.

Superintendent Stevens said that fortunately, nothing as serious has happened inside the school. But they’ve done bag checks in the past and found pocket knives. “This is just a quick, safe, efficient way of doing the same kind of a check on a daily basis and prevent any of those objects from their way in.”

300 students are expected to get through the metal detectors every fifteen minutes and no one has to come in earlier than usual. If a student does set the metal detectors off, they will be wanded down to the side and then continue on to breakfast…
