Girl who protected cousin in Troy explosion faces long-term rehab

TROY — When an explosion went off near a dumpster on Troy’s O’Neil Street last week, 9-year-old Alana put herself in harm’s way to protect her cousin, according to the girl’s family member.

Alana had been playing outside with her 5-year-old cousin on Aug. 17 when a “device” exploded, according to Alana’s aunt, Diahann Adepegba. Alana pushed her cousin out of the way and took the brunt of the blast. She suffered serious leg injuries and underwent multiple surgeries at Albany Medical Center.

Her family isn’t sure how long it will take for Alana to fully recover…
