$6.7 million generated from Albany school zone speed cameras

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Albany officials said safer streets have lowered costs for the city. After school zone speed cameras – and other measures – were introduced, car accidents are down. The city treasurer shared how much money has been generated and where it’s all going.

Officials said car crashes are down citywide. They credit traffic calming measures, including speed cameras in school zones.

“The point of these cameras were to slow people down in the city, and it is succeeding in that regard,” said Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar.

A host of other traffic calming measures were rolled out across the city, including speed humps, extended curbs and shorter crosswalks, and implemented on some of the major roads, including Lark, Madison, Clinton, Brevator, Pearl, Broadway, Southern Blvd., and Northern Blvd. The goal? Zero injuries, zero crashes, and zero endangered lives…
