Albany celebrates Ukrainian culture

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Polish Community Center turned blue and yellow Saturday afternoon for the Ukrainian festival. It’s a festival filled with food, music, and dance– all with a purpose that reaches far beyond the capital region.

The Ukrainian Festival in Albany brought traditional food, dancers and music to the Capital Region. Perogies, shish kabobs, traditional desserts and more filled attendees’ plates as they enjoyed cultural dances, performances, and speeches. There was also a silent auction held.

Organizers and attendees said this celebration as a way to draw attention to the needs of a country still at war. Ukrainian native Dr. Ivan Shvachuk adding, “We are fighting not only for Ukraine. We are fighting for the entire world, we’re fighting for democracy, for peace.”

Dr. Andrij Baran, President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of the Capital District said that his organization has sent over a million dollars in humanitarian aid over the last 3 years and said that that aid can mean the difference between life and death.

Dr. Baran said, “We were able to purchase several hundred Kevlar helmets, and we sent them to Ukraine. And about two weeks after we sent them, I received a photo with a soldier giving me the thumbs up because a bullet was stuck, hit his helmet and did not get into his head. So, we know for sure we saved at least one life.”…
