The Capital Region, centered in New York state’s capital city and venturing outward, is steeped in history, starting with Albany’s rich Dutch and Native American heritage. There are renowned landmarks everywhere you turn, from the ornate state Capitol to the birthplace and resting spot of Uncle Sam in Troy, up to the storied Saratoga Race Course and out to the historic Stockade District of Schenectady.
One former U.S. President is buried in Menands, while another’s grave lies in his hometown of Kinderhook. Even “fake” history is rich in the area, particularly in the entertainment arena (No, Don McLean’s “American Pie” wasn’t written at the Tin & Lint Company in Saratoga Springs, according to McLean, nor can it be 100% confirmed that “Yankee Doodle” was penned at Crailo State Historic Site in Rensselaer).
