Price Chopper buys Latham liquor store, a first for the chain

COLONIE — Price Chopper/Market 32 has purchased its first liquor store, located at 873 Loudon Road in Latham. It is in the same New Loudon Center plaza as Market Bistro, Price Chopper’s nearly 90,000-square-foot supermarket.

Latham Liquors is currently being operated on a temporary license, which State Liquor Authority records show is valid through March 14. A full license is pending, according to the SLA database.

Price Chopper spokeswoman Mona Golub confirmed the sale. She would not discuss whether the store fits in with future plans Price Chopper may have for its former in-store Chef’s Grill restaurant space at Market Bistro, closed since May, or on potential wine sales in supermarkets, which in the winter and spring received its strongest push in years for passage in the state budget but did not make it out of committee in the state Legislature. Price Chopper had a license to serve wine and beer in Chef’s Grill but could not carry wine as a supermarket product. If the change, known as wine in grocery stores, or WiGS, were to pass, other state laws likely would have to be amended, as liquor store owners can presently hold only one license…
