Woman accused of abandoning baby in cold water at GE campus doesn’t take stand

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WNYT) — The Schenectady woman accused of leaving her baby in freezing cold water in a utility shed at the General Electric campus did not take the stand in her own defense.

Persia Nelson is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the death of her 11-month-old daughter Halo Branton in March 2024.

The defense rested its case on Tuesday morning. Their witnesses included a meteorologist to analyze weather conditions in the Schenectady area on the evening of March 10, 2024. Another witness was a retired pharmacology professor to talk about how Nelson was drunk that night…
