Albany County sees big decrease in immigrant children at Head Start

ALBANY — An early education program that serves many immigrant families has seen a significant decrease in enrollment this fall.

Head Start in Albany County is usually full by this time, with a lengthy waitlist. But this year, there are so few children enrolled that the agency has not opened three classrooms. Even in the open classrooms, there is space for about 50 more children, out of 324 seats. That’s a decrease of about 25% from last year, when the program had 369 children (and three more classrooms).
