Attorney calls $8M Albany diocese settlement ‘a tremendous step towards accountability’

Albany, NY (WRGB) — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has agreed to pay an $8 million settlement to a man who says he was sexually abused as a child by a high-ranking priest decades ago.

The agreement comes just days before the case was set to go to trial on Monday. Attorneys for Michael Harmon, the survivor, say the settlement marks a significant step toward accountability for the church, adding this could set a precedent for hundreds of similar cases still pending in court.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Mallory Allen, Harmon’s lead attorney with PCVA Law. “Mike is very relieved. I think he does feel a sense of closure, though he knows there’s still a long road ahead.”…
