Person from 1800s buried in iron casket set to be re-buried

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – It’s been more than 150 years since Vale Cemetery opened and on Tuesday workers there prepped to re-bury human remains that were found in an iron casket from that same century. Those remains were recently unearthed in Hamilton Hill.

On October 13 human remains were recovered in Schenectady. It was later discovered the remains were in a cast iron casket, likely initially buried in the 1800s at the old Almshouse, also known as the Poorhouse.

Vale Cemetery is where those remains will be reinterred soon. The cemetery has been open for 168 years to the exact date.

“It was on October 21st, 1857, that we were officially consecrated and opened,” said Paula Lemire, the office manager at Vale Cemetery.
