Drug Takeback Day spotlights efforts to get harmful drugs out of medicine cabinets

CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — The Drug Enforcement Agency held its biannual National Drug Takeback Day this weekend. Taking place in April and October, police departments across the Capital Region hosted drop-off spots for people to dispose of old or unwanted medication.

The DEA’s Drug Takeback Day is a nationwide initiative to remove potentially harmful drugs from someone’s medicine cabinet. According to Niskayuna town board member Bill McPartlon, it is the safest way to dispose of the drugs.

“So we don’t want people to flush these down the toilet. You don’t want them to put it into the landfill. The chemicals that the drugs are made of then get into the drinking water system, they get into the landfill, and we don’t want that.”…
