Landslide fears likely to keep Bethlehem car wash closed for months, CEO says

BETHLEHEM — The Hoffman Car Wash on Delaware Avenue that was shuttered by the town in early October over fears the land on which it sits might give way will likely remain closed for weeks, if not months, as engineers work to find a long-term solution to shore up the area.

Bethlehem Town Attorney Jim Potter said he did not know if the crack in the earth had worsened in the month since the town issued an order on Oct. 12 closing the car wash and Jiffy Lube location at 55 Delaware Ave. The order said that slope movement on the property between the road and the Normans Kill posed “an imminent threat to public safety.”

Tom Hoffman Jr., the car wash chain’s CEO, said he would be meeting with his engineering firm this week to finalize a plan to stabilize the land. “I’m assuming it will be a favorable plan to help us repair the driveway and the slope,” Hoffman said. “The plan would be to the satisfaction of the town and their engineers, which has been our objective the whole time.”…
