PHOTOS: Northern lights across the Capital Region

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Capital Region enjoyed quite a show Tuesday night. The northern lights were visible across the northeast, showing off rays of red, green and purple.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are caused by electrons colliding with Earth’s upper atmosphere. The phenomenon is best seen just after sunset or just before sunrise.
