Proposal would allow developers to dodge Albany’s affordable housing rules

ALBANY — A new proposal would allow developers to buy their way out of complying with a city law requiring a certain number of affordable units to be included in housing developments.

The city’s Common Council voted 9-6 on Monday evening to amend a proposed ordinance that would have repealed a 2023 law that increased affordable housing requirements for developments.

The 2023 inclusionary zoning law required housing developments with more than 20 units to make between 7% and 13% of the units affordable for renters earning 60% or less than the area median income…
