Gansevoort man admits to raping a minor

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10)– On Friday, a Gansevoort man admitted to raping a minor in 2024. According to the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office, Matthew Vargues, 33, pleaded guilty to first degree rape.

Vargues was arrested in August 2024 following a sexual assault investigation, involving a child. According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, he allegedly raped a victim under 13 years old.

In New York State, a first degree rape conviction carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, probation of 10 years and a requirement to register as a sex offender. Officials said Vargues is expected to be sentenced on February 19 at 10 a.m.
