ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — An Albany man was sentenced in Albany County Court to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for assaulting a woman and causing the death of her unborn child. The Albany County District Attorney’s Office said Tylique Young, 18, purposely beat the victim, who was 27 weeks pregnant.

Young pleaded guilty to a five-count indictment in September that charged him with first-degree assault with the intent to disfigure, dismember, or disable, first-degree assault with the intent to cause serious injury with a weapon, second-degree kidnapping, and two counts of third-degree robbery. Court officials said Young held his girlfriend, 19, in his Orange Street apartment on May 15 and 16, stole her phone, and beat her with a hammer.
Court officials said that during the assault, she suffered from a ruptured placenta and required emergency medical treatment at Albany Medical Center. The victim took the stand with a photo of her baby at her feet.

“This was not an accident. This was not a misunderstanding. This was done on purpose,” the victim said. “You took away so many moments I could’ve had with him. I won’t ever get to teach him how to read… how to ride a bike or even watch him graduate. Most importantly, I won’t ever get to hear him call me mom.”
The DA’s office stated that Albany County Judge Andra Ackerman denied youthful offender status for Young. Young apologized during his sentencing to the victim and her family, saying that he would use his prison time as a chance to become a better person…
